Geography

Why we teach it

‘John Hall, my geography teacher at school inspired me to a lifelong interest in geography and a curiosity about our world which has stayed with me through my life. Geography is a living, breathing subject, constantly adapting itself to change. It is dynamic and relevant. For me geography is a great adventure with a purpose.’

Michael Palin

At Bidston Avenue we use ‘Switched on Geography’ scheme to deliver the required National Curriculum objectives for the subject. It is taught in half termly in every year group throughout the school.

At Bidston Avenue Primary School, we encourage our children to develop a greater understanding of their world and their place in it. By asking questions, we help them to develop a range of investigation and problem-solving skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas and which can be used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives; to promote children’s interest and understanding about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

How we teach it

Starting with the locality, we prepare our children for the ‘bigger world’ using a broad range of resources, including trips.  The resources we use also provide us with the tools to feed their curious minds as well as quench their thirst for general knowledge and current affairs, which will develop them as citizens for the future.

How to support your child in Geography

There some great ways to engage your child in the world around them.

Below are a few links to online games and card games, websites and books.  But even showing an interest in our local area is a great way to spark their interest.
