Music

Why we teach it

‘Music is a more potent instrument than any other for education’ Plato

‘I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music.’ Billy Joel

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.

As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.

How we teach it

We teach Music using the award-winning Charanga scheme, where the following elements of the Music Curriculum are developed through carefully sequenced units and the delivery of key skills and knowledge.

  • Playing and Performing
  • Creating and Composing
  • Responding and Reviewing
