Maths
Why we teach it
“Maths is the language in which the universe is written. It’s innate to the human brain and is a spectacular thing that we’ve discovered/invented.” Dara O Briain – Comedian and Television Presenter
“Mathematics knows no races or geographic boundaries; for mathematics, the cultural world is one country.” David Hilbert
Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
Our aim in Maths is to ensure all pupils are mathematically fluent, can reason and solve problems.
How we teach it
We teach Maths using the Maths No Problem scheme, an approach to teaching maths developed in Singapore and recognised for its impact on learning by The Department for Education, the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (NCETM), the National Curriculum Review Committee and OFSTED. Problem solving, fluency and relational understanding are at the heart of the scheme. It uses the Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach and allows pupils to spend enough time to fully explore a topic, reinforcing it with practice, before moving onto the next one. All ideas are built on previous knowledge and pupils have ample opportunity to develop relationships between topics. It is a mastery curriculum which means all children move through content together and teachers move on to the next step in learning when children are ready.
